The Art in love, art & fear

Life has always been an inter-active co-creative event.  At times, experience is like a choose your own adventure novel.  Other times, it seems like shit upon shit is being thrown at us.  Like dodge ball (except with shit).  Every single time we have two choices:  React or Respond.  Either way, we will create with life.

This brings me to the ‘Art’ in love, art & fear.  On one side of us is fear.  The other, love.  Here we are in the center of everywhere with a choice to make, conscious or not.

For years I have identified myself with being an artist and it has kept me in a box.  While we are artists because we create every day, this idea can be yet another limit that we place upon ourself.  I am so much more than just an artist.  So are you.  You make a difference in this world.  Maybe you don’t realize what an impact you have on those around you but I’m sure if you had the opportunity to see how effective you are, you’d be surprised.  Assholes have an impact too but I’ll assume that you’re not an asshole because assholes do not read this blog.

My point, if I have one is that we don’t need to call ourselves ‘artists’ because that is an inherent part of our function as beings.  Try creating a dance to express stillness.  Using words to describe silence won’t work either.  All words can do is point to it.  The same is true for us as creative beings.  Our life points to something.  At the end of our experience, our entire life will stand up, point and say “There.  Look.  It is what it is.”

This is our painting.

Our life says something to the universe.  Are we creating life as we want to be remembered by?  Are you saying what you want to say?

… but is it art?

It is all art.  Look around and find something that was not created.  Every single inter-action we have on a daily moment to moment basis is creative.  Calling myself an artist or doctor keeps me limited.  It is as fulfilling as it is meaningless.  What I mean is that it is neutral.  Each day is a blank canvass.  The power to create is not in talent, degrees or end results…

The power is in the blankness of the canvass and our willingness to engage creativity.  That is where potential lives.  That is where mystery abounds.

The Fear in love, art & fear

I used the title Love, Art & Fear to capture our experience as human beings.  It’s just an idea but it makes perfect sense to me.

We create.

For better or worse, richer or poorer we are married to the experience called life that we co-create with.  Love or Fear are the places we create from.

The ‘Fear’ in love, art & fear is a simple resistance to love.  When we resist love, we block our greatest good.  In fear, we hide and the wonders of life cannot find us.  It kills us slowly over time.  First in spirit, next in body.  Fear can be tricky because sometimes it manifests as comfort or convenience and we believe it to be a friend.  It whispers in our ear all of the reasons why our dream or goal won’t happen.  Most of all, it reminds us that we do not deserve love.  The reason for this is because love means the death of fear and fear wants to live.  Fear is pure resistance.

I’m obviously not talking about resistance of temptation or bad behaviors.  Resisting temptation makes us stronger with an intact character.  Saying no to a bad idea is always a good idea.  That form of resistance is from love.  I’m also not speaking about the fear that alerts us to danger.  That too, is from love.  I am specifically pointing out an imaginary psychological force that holds us hostage and keeps us from our own best interest.

We know when we are creating from fear because of the fruits.  Mostly, it fruits are mundane or mediocre.  Other times, it manifests as dread or anxiety about some imagined future event that will most likely not happen.

I would wager to say that all fear is the fear of death.  Resisting the very thing that sets us free is ridiculous.  Success means a death of old ways hence fear of success.  Fear of losing someone tends to result in smothering which eventually pushes that someone away.  Fear of physical death creates an enormous amount of stress in the body which could lead to a disease that the body succumbs to.

Fear inevitably creates the very circumstance we attempt to avoid by worrying or being fearful.

This is a great cosmic irony.

The good news is that fear is optional.

The philosopher of our time

This is a story about Mediocrites; the philosopher of our time.

Mediocrites silently preaches a gospel of go with the flow and keep your head down.  ”Don’t worry about it.  Someone else will figure it out.  Besides, think of all of the work that it would take to get that idea going”, he whispers into the ears of people.  In the early 1900′s, the public education began to take shape around the ideas of Mediocrites.  He, himself had no desire to get involved with the vision but it did make him chuckle.

Mediocrites currently resides in the brains of those who worship him.

Mediocrites, being fairly intelligent could understand why public education was being set up like a factory.  It had to produce an obedient work force that would carry out the plans of those in charge.  He just couldn’t understand why anyone in there right mind would go through all of that trouble.  In 1933, the philosophy of Mediocrites became a public mandate.  With the introduction of television, the world had a great potential to awaken and grow in many new ways with new ideas.  After the public mandate, television was relegated to programming aimed at the level of a twelve year old and became a pipeline for endless mind-numbing products.

With the masses strictly adhering to the new mandate, those that were in charge of innovation were under pressure to keep the products coming.  Those that asked questions about how to reduce factory pollution or facilitate fairness in distributing life enhancing innovative technology were quickly silenced by threat of losing their job, family or life.

With the advent of the internet, something began to occur.  People started inter-acting in new ways.  Even Mediocrites embraced this technology.  His current Facebook status says “Mediocrites is going to the store to pick up some things and is excited about the American Idol finale tonight:)”

Something bigger is going on however.  Mediocrites is dying.  Contrary to the desires of those who used Mediocrites ideas to create an global hamster wheel, people are communicating and inter-acting at a speed that no one could have planned for.  With this comes the spread of ideas at exceedingly rapid rates.  Naturally, because of this increase, neurons in human brains are firing faster and connecting more dots.  The philosophy of Mediocrites is slowly being replaced by something else, something greater, perhaps more aware.

You have to understand that Mediocrites never wanted his philosophy to be used in such a detrimental way.  He just wanted to live his life, do his thing and maintain what he had.  When he found all of this out, he just shrugged his shoulders.  I have compassion for him.  I’ve seen him around a lot but never made friends with him because, honestly, he is just so fucking boring to talk to.  I do feel for him though.

I’m not sure if anyone will attend his funeral but they will be troubled by his death.

R E A C T I O N

I love the lessons hidden in the language that I use in this life.  I appreciate that I can simply move the ‘C’ in one word to make a new word and then make a point about both words…

The human being is an experiential artist.  We create every single day on a blank canvass and this is our opportunity for expression.

The ever so popular saying “shit happens” comes to mind as I ponder this.  We are all subject to circumstances, favorable or otherwise and the moment shit happens is our opportunity to choose.  That is our power:  Choice.

Are we reacting?  When the shit hits the proverbial fan, do we become the shit by reacting without thinking?  Do we panic based on past experience that it’s all bad?  Are we worrying ourselves to death over that which is beyond our control?

Or

Are we creating?  Do we step back and look for the opportunity to choose a different behavior or way of seeing the problem?  Are we using the experience as molding clay or a stepping stone to growth?

Some of the biggest discoveries on Earth happen because mistakes are made and then creative minds step back to observe reality.  Life is a masterpiece so don’t live it reacting to the world around you.  Dance with it and create.  In this way you’re more likely to leave this world with a smile asking “what comes next?????
