The Fear in love, art & fear

I used the title Love, Art & Fear to capture our experience as human beings.  It’s just an idea but it makes perfect sense to me.

We create.

For better or worse, richer or poorer we are married to the experience called life that we co-create with.  Love or Fear are the places we create from.

The ‘Fear’ in love, art & fear is a simple resistance to love.  When we resist love, we block our greatest good.  In fear, we hide and the wonders of life cannot find us.  It kills us slowly over time.  First in spirit, next in body.  Fear can be tricky because sometimes it manifests as comfort or convenience and we believe it to be a friend.  It whispers in our ear all of the reasons why our dream or goal won’t happen.  Most of all, it reminds us that we do not deserve love.  The reason for this is because love means the death of fear and fear wants to live.  Fear is pure resistance.

I’m obviously not talking about resistance of temptation or bad behaviors.  Resisting temptation makes us stronger with an intact character.  Saying no to a bad idea is always a good idea.  That form of resistance is from love.  I’m also not speaking about the fear that alerts us to danger.  That too, is from love.  I am specifically pointing out an imaginary psychological force that holds us hostage and keeps us from our own best interest.

We know when we are creating from fear because of the fruits.  Mostly, it fruits are mundane or mediocre.  Other times, it manifests as dread or anxiety about some imagined future event that will most likely not happen.

I would wager to say that all fear is the fear of death.  Resisting the very thing that sets us free is ridiculous.  Success means a death of old ways hence fear of success.  Fear of losing someone tends to result in smothering which eventually pushes that someone away.  Fear of physical death creates an enormous amount of stress in the body which could lead to a disease that the body succumbs to.

Fear inevitably creates the very circumstance we attempt to avoid by worrying or being fearful.

This is a great cosmic irony.

The good news is that fear is optional.

The Parasite

Generally, a parasite is defined as an organism that requires a host to ensure its survival.  There is a huge difference between a parasitic system and a symbiotic one.  I was thinking about this today in regards to life and human beings.  It is easy for us  humans to bash our own species when it comes to consumption and how we live on Earth but I’m not going to engage in that idea today.  We do have a tendency to over-consume and this is a self-destructive behavioral pattern but I see something deeper.

This is where I may lose some of you.  What I see is a parasite that has embedded itself so deeply into our minds, hearts and culture that we just assume that it is us and that this is just the way it is.  Calling it fear or the devil or human nature is a bit irresponsible so I will over-simplify it by calling it the parasite.

I once read that the goal of a demon is the death of its host as this would be the ultimate form of control.  When I look around these days I have to wonder what the hell is going on.  It seems like we are on a path of self-destruction as a species but I wonder if we have allowed this parasite to convince us that it is us, that it does not exist and that this is just how life is here… then you die.  What a great survival mechanism that is; convincing the world that you do not exist.  That is brilliant but once we see the parasite it’s game over.

We can overcome this.

I once argued with someone about bringing clean water to all of Africa.  Their argument was that it would cost too much money.  Really?  Making the planet worse is more affordable for those who print money out of nothing I suppose?  How fucking delusional is that line of thinking?

Fear is the biggest tool that the parasite uses to prevent us from real progress.  Fear itself is just an emotion but it can paralyze us.  The original purpose of fear was to alert us of danger or threat.  The parasite has us convinced that we can only live one way and that this is our culture.  Change is a threat.  New is a risk.  Success and love are enemies.  These are all lies that our culture tells us and that we perpetuate through lack of inquiry.

This is not an easy issue.  What we have in our global culture is a systemic dis-ease that begins in the mind and then manifests outwardly.  The good news is that each of us has a choice to acknowledge this and overcome it by listening to the truth of who we really are.
