life as school

Life is not the box we put it in.

Life is spherical, dynamic, fluid, ever-changing and breathing.

I’m curious of our human tendency to put everything into boxes.  We live in houses (boxes), drive to work in a car or bus (box on wheels) to offices/businesses (bigger boxes) and try to buy, sell or file ideas (box o thoughts).

Did you know that the human mind will project a fourth wall when confronted with the concept of a cubicle?  If you are sitting with a wall in front and two walls on either side for long enough your mind will subconsciously create an enclosure.  Sure, you may think that you know better but the subconscious algorithms that are responsible for you staying in a situation that you detest think differently.

Life awaits.

Whatever it is that you are doing today, do it knowing that it is a choice and I will do the same.

We are in the school of life and it has no walls or books.  The curriculum is unpredictable and the subjects are us.  Choice is the way we play.  There is love and there is fear.  Art is the result.  Have fun.  The teacher is awesome!!!

The helmet society

My mom remembers a time when people drove without seatbelts or child car seats and the death rate was actually lower.  As a child I loved to ride my bike everywhere.  Many times, I wiped out really bad.  I have scars to attest to this fact.  I never wore a helmet.  The freedom of the wind blowing through my hair was too important as a romantic metaphor for me to place a hard shell over it.

Now, it seems like we have become over protective as a society.  Not me.  Perhaps not you but someone who makes legislative decisions has an incessant need to make sure we are all safe, padded and afraid to eat butter.  As far as I remember we all get one death in our lifetime so why live it in fear?

One of the funniest things I ever done saw a few years back was a guy speeding on a crotch rocket style motorbike wearing speedos, water shoes… and a helmet.  I was curious as to why he was wearing the helmet.  As he is laying in the hospital, skinless and broken would he think “I’m so glad that I had that helmet on so that I could be alive to experience all of this pain”?

In no way am I suggesting that helmets are bad or don’t save people or that you needn’t wear one.  My problem is when other people attempt to quash my free will through statutory legislation and fines.  We as a human species seem to be really proficient as making sure the lowest common denominator survives thus ensuring our collective entropy.

By the way, no German men named Helmut were harmed in the making of this post.

Pavlov’s people

It’s recess for the kids outside and they’re having a blast.  Suddenly, the lady with the hand bell starts to ring it as she gives the five-minute warning of the school buzzer to the kids.

People often speak of Pavlov’s dog but completely forget that those experiments were conducted to prove a point in Psychological Respondent Conditioning.

We are Pavlovian people:  We set the alarm to go to school.  We have to be in class before the bell.  We eat lunch at the 11:45 or noon bell and must be back by 1pm when another bell will chime.  This type of conditioning was developed in order to mold people into good factory workers.  As adults recess turns into a smoke break.  Lunch is still lunch and home time is still fucking awesome!!!

I don’t really have a point with this post.  I just thought that “Pavlov’s People” had an interesting ring to it.  haha.
